P340,000 worth of shabu
seized from Baras couple

A BARAS LABORER AND HIS WIFE are read their Miranda rights by a PDEA agent during their arrest last Oct. 13, 2021 for possession of dangerous drugs found during a court-ordered search of their house in barangay Danao. The police report estimated the volume of shabu confiscated in the operation at about P340,000.

A laborer and his fish vendor wife from Baras could earn a lengthy stay in prison if convicted of possession of shabu found in their home during a police search last week.
An initial report from the Catanduanes Provincial Police Office stated that joint personnel of the Baras MPS Municipal Drug Enforcement Unit, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Provincial Intelligence Unit (PIU) and the Regional Police Drug Enforcement Unit (RPDEU) mounted the operation against Juanito “Jun” Taniegra Torrente, 52, and Dolores “Buba” Tayoto Torrente, 50, in barangay Danao at 3:49 AM of Oct. 13, 2021 after securing a search warrant from Regional Trial Court Branch 42 Presiding Judge Genie G. Gapas-Agbada.
During the search of the couple’s home, the police confiscated a plastic bag containing a sizable quantity of shabu and three small sachets, with the illegal drug estimated to weigh a total of 50 grams with a street value of P340,000.
The report identified the couple as included in the PRO5 Recalibrated Priority Database on Illegal Drugs – Regional Targets/High Value Individual/DI Listed before Resumption.
The police said the duo’s arrest will significantly reduce the availability of illegal drugs in Baras and nearby towns.
A criminal charge for violation of Section 11 of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, will be filed against the Torrentes before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
They could face life imprisonment and a fine of at least P500,000 each should they be found guilty by the Court.
