Seven people were apprehended in two separate police operations against illegal gambling operations in the capital town of Virac last week.
Joint elements of the Virac police station, the Catanduanes Provincial Intelligence Unit and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) first struck at 3:20 P.M. of Feb. 20, 2021 at barangay Francia where they caught in the act three persons engaged in the local card game of “tong-its.”
It identified the suspects as “Edwin,” 49, “Gabby,” 30, and “Emmanuel,” 62, all residents of the barangay. The police confiscated a set of playing cards and bet money amounting to P112.
Twenty-five minutes later in Sta. Elena, the same team came upon “Jennie,” 55, “Jose,” 43, and “Francisco,” 45, all of barangay, and “Julian,” 64, of Constantino, while playing mahjong.
The police failed to catch a fifth suspect, one alias “Kidong” after he managed to escape. Confiscated at the scene were the mahjong set and bet money totaling P1,213.00.
The authorities were prompted to conduct the operations after receiving complaints regarding illegal gambling activities in the two barangays.
Separate charges of violation of Presidential Decree 1602 are now being prepared for filing against the suspects.
