But preparing for her role which requires an equal dose of good acting and spectacular singing, the soprano said she has a good idea how to approach her Mad Scene in the opera. “This mad moment is not something that dropped from above. It is the result of emotional trauma. I’d like to build that mad moment and make it look real and not contrived. I take time building the scene and not just by looking insane but by projecting something inside me. In opera, even Lucia’s kind of madness should make sense.”

The zombie film in Mikhail Red’s mind
It is nothing totally new to him because as early as age 15 when he studied under Marilou Diaz-Abaya, he would fancy doing zombie films using ketchup as make-believe blood. “So when I was given the opportunity to do a big, studio-funded zombie film, I jumped at the idea. It took a year and a half to prepare and shoot it but it is all worth it. This is the big zombie movie I’ve always wanted to do when I was younger. I started by planning the mechanics and then choosing the cast and closely working with the creative team.”
Music-making around volcano country
I’ve always been fascinated by Taal Volcano which I could see every time I visit what then was known as the Taal Vista Lodge. In 1995, I brought Licad and cellist-husband Antonio Meneses to perform in one of the functions rooms. It has a view of Taal Volcano seen from the glass partition. I actually imagined a volcano acting up when they played the Shostakovich sonata.

The irony of it all is that as the top three best pictures were announced, the award winning films were also losing theaters to the box office champions.
