Sacerdos in Aeternum (a priest forever) | Rev. Fr. Rommel M. Arcilla:

Fullness of Life in Doing God’s Will

In the Gospel proclaimed last Sunday Jesus once again reminds His disciples that love for Him is never separated from obedience. Whoever truly loves Christ must keep His commandments. Love is not merely spoken through words or emotions. Love is proven through fidelity trust surrender and commitment. This teaching of Christ is both comforting and challenging because it forces every believer to examine the kind of relationship he truly has with God.

Many people today speak about fullness of life. It has become a common expression in religious gatherings inspirational talks and even ordinary conversations. Everyone longs for a complete and meaningful life. Every person dreams of happiness peace freedom and fulfillment. No one wishes to live in misery emptiness and despair. Yet despite all the advancements of modern society many hearts remain restless and unsatisfied. The world continues to progress materially while many souls quietly collapse spiritually.

The problem lies in the fact that the world has created its own distorted meaning of fullness of life. For many people life becomes complete when one acquires wealth influence popularity and pleasure. Some think that happiness is found in luxurious living and worldly success. Others believe that life reaches its peak when one becomes admired by many and envied by others. There are people who spend their entire lives chasing material comfort while neglecting the deeper hunger of the soul.

Yet reality repeatedly reveals the emptiness of these worldly pursuits. Many rich people still live in anxiety and loneliness. Many famous personalities secretly suffer from sadness and confusion. Many powerful individuals continue to fear losing their position and influence. There are people who seem to possess everything yet still feel empty inside. The reason is simple. The human heart was not created merely for worldly satisfaction. The human soul was created for God.

True fullness of life can only be found in doing the will of God. This is the great truth that many have forgotten. Life becomes meaningful not because we possess everything but because we belong completely to the One who created us. The more we allow God to reign in our hearts the more we become truly alive.

Jesus Himself revealed this truth through His own life. Christ never pursued earthly glory. He did not seek riches fame or political power. He had no palace no army and no worldly possessions to boast of. Yet no person who ever lived possessed greater peace freedom and joy than Jesus Christ. Why? Because His entire life was rooted in perfect obedience to the Father.

Everything that Jesus did flowed from love and surrender to the will of God. Even in moments of agony suffering rejection and death He remained faithful to the Father’s plan. In the Garden of Gethsemane while facing the terrible reality of the cross Jesus uttered words that revealed the deepest secret of true life. Not my will but yours be done. In those words Christ showed humanity that real freedom is not found in following selfish desires but in surrendering oneself completely to God.

Sadly the modern world teaches the exact opposite. Society often tells people that freedom means doing whatever they want whenever they want. Many now believe that commandments morality and discipline are obstacles to happiness. People want unlimited freedom without responsibility and pleasure without consequences. Yet this kind of false freedom slowly destroys the human soul.

A person enslaved by sin is not free. A person controlled by anger greed lust pride dishonesty or hatred is not free. A person addicted to worldly pleasures is not truly alive. Sin promises happiness but eventually leaves emptiness and slavery. This is why many people today appear to have everything yet continue to live without peace.

Real freedom is the freedom to choose what is good true and pleasing before God. Pope Saint John Paul the Second beautifully explained this in his encyclical Veritatis Splendor. Genuine freedom is never separated from truth. Human beings become truly free only when they live according to God’s will. Freedom detached from God eventually becomes destruction.

This explains why many holy people radiated joy even amid suffering. The saints were not necessarily rich powerful or famous. Many of them endured persecution poverty sickness and sacrifice. Yet despite these hardships they possessed deep peace within their hearts. They discovered a truth that the world often refuses to understand. Happiness is not the absence of suffering. Happiness is the presence of God.

Many people today are tired and restless because they are trying to live without God. They seek blessings without obedience. They desire peace without repentance. They ask for happiness while refusing to follow the commandments of the Lord. Yet the human heart will never find lasting peace while separated from the source of life itself.

The Gospel this Sunday reminds us that love for Christ is shown through obedience. If we truly love Him then we must also strive to live according to His teachings. This includes forgiveness honesty humility purity compassion and faithfulness. Christianity is not merely about attending Mass or saying prayers. Christianity is about allowing Christ to transform our entire lives.

Sadly many Christians today desire a comfortable discipleship. They want the promises of heaven without sacrifice. They want the blessings of Christ without carrying the cross. They want mercy without conversion. Yet the road toward fullness of life always passes through surrender obedience and trust in God.

Doing the will of God is not always easy. Sometimes God’s will leads us through suffering disappointment and painful sacrifices. Sometimes we do not understand why certain trials happen in our lives. Yet faith teaches us that God never allows suffering without purpose. Even our crosses can become instruments of grace when united with Christ.

Nothing could truly go wrong when we entrust ourselves completely to God. Even painful experiences can become pathways toward holiness and salvation. God sees beyond what human eyes can see. What appears as defeat today may later become a source of blessing and spiritual growth.

Many times we fail. Many times we become weak sinful and unfaithful. Yet the beauty of God’s love is found in His endless mercy. Christ never grows tired of forgiving those who sincerely return to Him. His arms stretched out on the cross remain open for every sinner seeking forgiveness healing and new life.

The world today desperately needs people who will choose truth over deception holiness over sin humility over pride and obedience over selfishness. Society continues to suffer because many have rejected God’s will. Corruption violence dishonesty immorality and injustice continue to spread because human beings want freedom without God.

This is why Christians are called not merely to believe in Christ but to live for Him every single day. The fullness of life that Jesus promises is not reserved only for heaven. It begins even now whenever we allow God to reign in our hearts. A person living in God’s grace possesses a joy that the world can neither give nor destroy.

At the end of our earthly journey worldly possessions will lose their value. Fame will disappear. Wealth will remain behind. Power will come to an end. What will truly matter is whether we loved God and fulfilled His will in our lives.

Heaven itself is fullness of life because heaven is eternal union with God who is the source of all joy peace freedom and love. May we never waste our lives chasing temporary things while neglecting the eternal. May we have the courage to surrender ourselves completely to Christ. May we learn to trust God even when His will becomes difficult and painful. For in the end fullness of life is found not in possessing the world but in belonging completely to God.
