Diocese of Virac launches 3-year Pastoral Plan as it closes Golden Foundation Year

As it closes a year of gratitude marking 50 years since the diocese was established as an independent entity from the Diocese of Legazpi, the Diocese of Virac celebrates a Solemn Thanksgiving Mass this Aug. 27, 2025 at the at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral to be presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Caceres Rex Andrew C. Alarcon, DD.

Government officials, sectoral representatives, Basic Faith Communities and parishioners from the nine (9) vicariates will attend the Mass, during which a new chapter in the Diocesan history unfolds as Bishop Luisito A. Occiano, D.D., launches a three-year Diocesan Pastoral Plan, “A Synodal Church Living out the Tria Munera (the priestly, prophetic, and kingly functions) of Christ”.

This plan is the fruit of extensive consultations and dialogues with the clergy and laity, aiming to vivify and fructify the Tria Munera in the lives of the faithful, the Diocese said in a press statement.

A Journey of Synodality

The pastoral plan will be implemented through strategic plans and operational goals, with Basic Ecclesial Communities to be formed at the barangay level. This will allow each member of the diocesan family to experience the Tria Munera as a fruit of their baptism.

Celebrating Together

To involve all communities, thanksgiving Masses will be held in the 9 vicariates of the diocese as follows:  August 18 – Viga, 19 – Panganiban, 20 – Pandan, 21 – San Andres, 22 – Virac (Mass venue is Calatagan Church), 23 – Caramoran, 24 – Baras, 25 – San Miguel, and 26 – Bato.

A Legacy of Faith

The Diocese of Virac was established on August 27, 1974, by Pope St. Paul VI’s Pontifical Bull “Divino Christi Mandato”, with former Bishops Jose C. Sorra and Manolo A. de los Santos having led the diocese with dedication and genuine pastoral solicitude.

“Today, we look forward to a new chapter under the leadership of Bishop Occiano, geared towards becoming a Synodal Church living out the Priestly, Prophetic, and Kingly Offices of Christ,” the statement declared.

Looking Ahead

During the day, Archbishop Alarcon and Bishop Occiano will lead the blessing of the finished portions of the Home for the Clergy at the Fiat Compound. This project will provide shelter for ailing and aged priests and facilities for continuing clergy formation.

“Let us join in gratitude and hope as we close this chapter and embark on a new journey, guided by the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception,” the Diocese urged.
