2 Bicol universities among top 100 universities in RP

Sorsogon State University (SorSU) and Bicol University were recently recognized as two of the top universities in the Philippines, according to the 2025 EduRank global rankings.

These are the only two state universities from the Bicol region that made it to the top 100 list of the 2025 EduRank rankings, which evaluated 229 educational institutions in the Philippines.

In the Philippine rankings, SorSU and BU secured the 81st and 94th positions, respectively.

In Asia, SorSU and BU were ranked 3,564th and 3,827th, respectively, while on the global scale, they ranked 9,044th and 9,627th, respectively.

However, a private institution in Bicol, Ateneo de Naga University placed higher than the two state institutions of higher learning at #45 on the national ranking.

AdeNU was ranked 2,783rd and 7,147th, respectively, in Asia and the world.

The top 10 universities in the country are: #1 – University of the Philippines Diliman (366th and 1,348th in Asia and the world); #2 – De La Salle University (504th/1,728th); #3 – Ateneo de Manila University (565th/1903rd); #4 – University of Santo Tomas (832nd/2,628th); #5 – UP Los Banos (882nd/2,774th); #6 – UP Manila (904th/2843rd); #7 – University of San Carlos in Cebu (1,414th/4,132nd); 8th – Mapua University (1639th/4,626th); 9th – Mindanao State University (1,649th/4,652nd); and Asian Institute of Management (1669th/4,703rd).

The EduRank website listed Catanduanes State University in 109th place, in the company of University of St. La Salle of Bacolod (104th), Jose Rizal University of Mandaluyong (105th), University of Baguio (106th), Arellano University (107th), University of the Cordilleras in Baguio (108th), St. Paul University in Manila (110th), La Salle University in Ozamiz (11th), Cavite State University (112th), University of Cebu (113th) and University of Nueva Caceres in Naga (114th).

EduRank, an independent ranking system based on metrics, evaluated 5,830 universities across Asia and 14,131 universities in 183 countries. The rankings are determined by factors such as research output, alumni influence and non-academic prominence.

Non-academic prominence indicates how well a university is recognized by the general public.

The rankings were determined by analyzing 2.96 billion citations from 115 million academic publications across 14,131 universities worldwide, the popularity of 233,449 recognized alumni and the largest available reference database. (With a report from PIA)
