Baras fistfight leads to stabbing

A fisherman sent home earlier after a fistfight in a Baras coastal barangay returned for more and was instead stabbed in the back by his adversary last Saturday evening.

The Baras municipal police station said in its report that Joseph Bernardo Vergara, 41, was talking with fellow fisherman Arnold Torrecampo, 20, at about 7:30 PM of March 9, 2024 in front of the house of Jonathan Molod in barangay Abihao when an argument erupted between the duo.

The quarrel worsened into a fistfight, with Molod and Jessy Torres pacifying the two fishermen and sending them home.

However, Vergara returned, shouting for a fistfight with Torrecampo, provoking the latter to come out and stab Vergara multiple times at the back using an unknown sharp object.

Responding personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) brought Vergara to the nearest hospital for treatment. Police officers arrested the suspect and placed him in custody pending the filing of a criminal complaint.
