PSA Catanduanes surveys crop production, farm prices this May

The Philippine Statistics Authority is conducting two important surveys in Catanduanes this month: the 2nd Quarter 2022 Crops Production Survey (CrPS) and the monthly Farm Prices Survey in all municipalities.

The CrPS is a quarterly survey that aims to generate basic production statistics for crops other than palay and corn at the national and sub-national levels.

The CrPS covers eighty-six (86) crops sub-classified under three commodity groupings, namely:  1) Non-Food and Industrial Crops, 2) Fruit Crops, and 3) Vegetables and Root Crops.

The commodity coverage by municipality differs and depends on what each municipality produces.

It also varies by the municipality based on the availability in terms of planting and seasonality.  The field enumeration for the Second Quarter 2022 CrPS will be undertaken from 20-30 May 2022.

The data collection will be conducted by 11 hired Statistical Researchers (SRs) through face-to-face paper and pencil interview (PAPI).

Information from the farmer-producer consists of the actual volume of production, area, and the number of bearing trees/hills/vines during the reference quarter.

A total of 14 non-food and industrial commodities, 49 vegetable commodities, and 23 fruit commodities will be collected from farmers’ producers in the province.

Also this May, the PSA will conduct the monthly Farm Prices Survey in all 11 towns.

The 2022 FPS aims to generate estimates on farmgate prices of major agricultural commodities, develop sets of price indices and measure the purchasing power of growers of selected agricultural products, and serve as inputs in analyzing the seasonal trends and variations in agricultural prices.

Farm prices are vital information not only to farmers and traders but also to government agencies involved in planning agricultural programs.

The general purpose of the FPS is to gather reliable price information at the farm level. Specifically, the FPS aims to: a) generate estimates on farmgate prices of major agricultural commodities; b) develop sets of price indices and to measure the purchasing power of growers of selected agricultural products, and c) serve as input in analyzing the seasonal trends and variations in agricultural prices.

The field enumeration for the said survey will be undertaken from 20-30 May 2022.

For each sample municipality, at least five (5) sample farmers/producers who sold the commodity during the reference month will be purposively selected and be interviewed.

Whenever possible, the sample farmers/producers should come from different barangays including the top producing barangays of a particular commodity.

The data collection will be conducted by the eight (8) hired Statistical Researchers (SRs) through face-to-face with the use of paper and pencil interview (PAPI).

The SRs and Field Supervisors are strictly observing proper health protocols in dealing with respondents, with the Statistical Researchers enjoined to explore the use of phone, email, and other creative ways to collect information needed in the surveys.

The authority and mandate of the PSA to conduct the survey emanate from R.A. 10625. Like any other surveys undertaken by the PSA, the data to be gathered in the said survey are for statistical purposes only and will be published in summary forms. Information obtained from the respondents are held STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL and are not used for investigation, taxation, and law enforcement purposes and are not to be divulged to any person except authorized PSA personnel acting in the performance of their duties.
