CatSU hosts Bicol-wide culture and arts fest

By the last three days of April of this year, the Catanduanes State University will be the venue for the 2022 PASUC V Culture and Arts Festival.

Adopting the theme “Sining at Kultura ng Pag-asa,Tungo sa Ibayong Pagpapahalaga,” the April 28-30, 2022 event is a competitive showcase of talents of students from State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the Bicol Region in various fields of the arts. In all, the students will vie for awards in 24 categories in five (5) areas of artistic endeavors.

These are: live, band, solo singing of kundiman, solo singing of Original Pilipino Music, vocal duet, classical guitar playing (musical); essay-writing in English, pagsusulat ng sanay in Filipino, extemporaneous speaking in English, dagliang talumpati in Filipino, storytelling in English, pagkukuwento in Filipino (literary);  short and sweet play, radio drama (theatre); painting, charcoal rendering, pencil sketching, poster-making, and photography (visual arts); indigenous dance, folk dance, contemporary dance, street dance/hiphop (dance).

There are nine SUCs in the Bicol Region expected to field their student contestants. These are: Bicol State College of Applied Science and Technology (BisCAST), Bicol University (BU), Catanduanes State University (CatSU), Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA), University of Camarines Norte (UCN), Polytechnic State University of Bicol (PSUB), Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology (DEBESMSCAT), Partido State University (ParSU), Sorsogon State University (SSU).

Highlight of the festival is the search for Mr. and Miss PASUC V pageant, to be held at the Virac Town Center, 6:00 p.m. on April 29, 2022. Two major titles will be at stake, plus special awards. Each of the Bicol SUCs will be represented in the pageant.

Winners of the contests will represent the Bicol Region in the national festival, an annual undertaking of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC). Currently, PASUC Region V is headed by Bicol University President Dr. Arnulfo M. Mascariñas.

The implementing arm of the festival in the region is the Bicol Association of Arts and Culture Directors and Coordinators or the BAACDC, headed by Dr. Leopoldo R. Transona.  Dr. Baby Boy Benjamin Nebres III serves as consultant to the festival.

On the part of the host institution, Dr. Patrick Alain T. Azanza, SUC President III of CatSU, is Chair of the Executive Committee, co-chaired by the three vice-presidents, namely, Dr. Lily P. Custodio (VP Academic Affairs), Dr. Ma. Edna R. Iñigo (VP Administrative and Financial Affairs) and Dr. Ramon Felipe A. Sarmiento (VP Research, Extension and Production Affairs).

The Festival Management Committee is being chaired by Dr. Sarmiento, who is also Director of the Center for Catandungan Heritage, with CatSU’s Director for Student Services, Prof. John Cyrus Francis, as Co-Chair.
