Marine soldier shot Viga man in self-defense – PNP

A member of the Philippine Marines is now in custody of the Viga police station after allegedly shooting a resident of barangay Ogbong in self-defense last Saturday.

The report released by the Catanduanes police at Camp Francisco Camacho stated that the police station was informed at 6:35 PM of Dec. 18, 2021 regarding a victim of a shooting incident who was being treated at the Viga District Hospital.

Viga MPS officer-in-charge PLt. Alex Alcantara immediately sent a team led by PSSg. Mark P Tesorero, together with PCpl. Vincent Clarence Taule to conduct an investigation.

According to the reports, the victim, abaca stripper Dante Morales Datiles, 49, had a quarrel with his live-in partner at around 6:20 PM, which attracted the attention of Marine SSg. Lewis Tumaquip, 39, who is the brother of Datiles’ partner.

The soldier allegedly tried to pacify the couple but Datiles did not stop and instead got a bladed weapon inside the house and attempted to stab Tumaquip.

Evading the knife attack, the soldier went home but he was pursued by Datiles, forcing the Marine to grab his Cal. 45 pistol and shoot Datiles once at the upper portion of his waist.

The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital while responding policemen found SSg. Tumaquip waiting for them at the crime scene. He surrendered the gun that still had four bullets in it, with one spent shell recovered by the lawmen on the ground.
