Uwan leaves P561-M damage to DepEd schools

Face-to-face classes have resumed in all 268 public schools under the Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Catanduanes, with initial estimates of super typhoon Uwan’s damage to facilities now reaching P561 million.

Atty. Norlito P. Agunday, Jr., head of the Legal Unit, told the Tribune that as of Friday last week, 258 schools have already adopted face-to-face classes.

“By Monday, expected na natin na 100 percent na ng schools ay may face-to-face classes na,” he said. “Yung remaining 10 schools na naka-modular pa ay dahil nasa clearing operations pa lang sila due to severe damage caused by flooding.”

The schools and its facilities will have to be assessed to ensure that it would be safe for the children to enter, Atty. Agunday added.

According to the report prepared by the office of OIC-Schools Division Superintendent Ma. Jeany T. Abayon,  the calamity affected a total of 69.829 learners and 4.425 teachers and non-teaching personnel, with two learners and one staff injured.

In all, 87 schools were used as evacuation centers for 1,433 families, including 3,098 learners.

A total of 119 schools were totally damaged, with 368 sustaining major damage and another 1,527 with minor damage.

WASH facilities totaling 310 were also damaged along with 307 ancillary facilities, 7,581 chairs, 155,234 learning modules, and 1,223 IT equipment.

Elementary schools accounted for majority of the damage at P396 million, with high schools sustaining a total of P156 million.

Caramoran’s North and South Districts topped the other districts in terms of total damage with P94 million, followed by Pandan East and West district’s P65 million.

Caramoran’s total does not include the P50 million inflicted by the typhoon on its secondary schools, with Caramoran School of Fisheries sustaining the largest damage province wide at P37 million.
