PSA: Catanduanes had 1,803 deaths last year

The province of Catanduanes had 1,804 deaths reported to the civil registration office last year, with nearly nearly a third of the death registrations not stating the cause of death, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported last week.

Of the total 1,782 deaths of residents in Catanduanes, 502 or 28.2 percent of the registrations did not state the underlying cause of death.

Hypertensive cardiovascular disease accounted for 155 deaths or 8.7 percent while ischemic heart disease played a major role in the demise of 50 others (2.8%). Hypertension and Coronary Artery Disease contributed 28 deaths each.

The preliminary report send by PSA Catanduanes Provincial Statistical Office said the municipality of Panganiban had the highest crude death rate with 18.81 or 19 deaths per thousand population while San Andres had the lowest crude death rate with 1.27 or one death per thousand population.

Here’s the breakdown of the 2024 deaths: Bagamanoc, 63; Baras, 93; Bato, 169; Caramoran, 164; Gigmoto, 59; Pandan, 161; Panganiban, 49; San Andres, 274; Viga, 131; and Virac. 506. Another 21 Catandunganons also died while away from the island.

Of the total deaths in Catanduanes reported in 2024, 21.9 percent or 391 deaths were aged 71-80 years old. This is followed by aged 61-70 years old with 326 deaths or 18.3 percent.

Virac had the highest number of fetal deaths with 20, while Viga, Caramoran, Bato, Pandan and San Andres had one each. The other five towns had zero fetal deaths for 2024.

Forty-eight (48) infant deaths were recorded in the province in 2024 which translates to infant death rate of 14.

Of the total recorded infant deaths in 2024, 41.7 percent or 20 were from Virac and 14.6 percent (7) were from San Andres.

Six mothers also died last years, with San Andres (2), and one each in Virac, Caramoran, Bato and Bagamanoc all reporting zero maternal deaths.

Among 54 deaths due to external causes recorded in the province during the year, vehicular accident was the highest, with 24 deaths or 44.4 percent of the total.

Suicides with 16 deaths or 29.6 percent, accidents with eight deaths or 14.8 percent, drownings with four deaths or 7.4 percent and fall with two deaths or 3.7 percent, accounted for the balance.
