The Catanduanes police has blamed on reckless driving as the cause of twin vehicular accidents in Baras and Bato towns last week in which led to the hospitalization of five people.
In Baras last Saturday afternoon, Sept. 21, 2024, Antonio Gonzales Valenzuela, 24, a laborer from barangay Osmeña believed to be intoxicated, was on his motorcycle at around 4:30 PM along the provincial road at Moning when his erratic driving made the vehicle slip on a muddy portion of the road.
As a result, his vehicle’s momentum brought it into the opposite lane where it collided with another motorcycle driven by construction worker Alexander Depoto Domanais, 30, of Cabuyoan, Panganiban, who was on his way to Tilod.
Both drivers sustained injuries to the different parts of their bodies and were rushed to the Bato Maternity and Children’s Hospital by responding MDRRMO personnel for medical attention. The report said Valenzuela could not present a driver’s license.
Just five days earlier, on Sept. 16, in Guinobatan, Bato, abaca stripper Michael Tarin Bañas, a resident of Mabato, San Miguel, was driving an unregistered motorcycle towards Virac at 1:15 PM when he accidentally hit two children who suddenly crossed the road.
The two victims – elementary pupils Samantha Jane Barba and Zarah Marchielyn Tesorero, both eight years old and Guinobatan residents – had to be brought to BMCH along with Bañas for medical treatment.
