Environmental planners’ group sworn in

Officers of the Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners (PIEP) Catanduanes chapter, sworn in last weekend, are set to serve as emissaries on environmental protection and conservation on the island.

During their oathtaking ceremony at Rakdell Inn last March 9, 2024, Governor Joseph C. Cua, represented by PBM Rafael C. Zuniega, administered the oath to the founding officers headed by Nieva G. Santelices as president.

The other officers are: Elsie B. Reyes, vice president; Maria M. Gianan, secretary; Franklin T. Toledana, treasurer; Rogelio T. Tendencia, auditor; Meden B. Fernandez, PRO; and, Jose G. Ong, Abegail A. Sandagon, Perpetuo Pastor, Gerald B. Alvaro, Joan V. Estrada, Henry Santos, Lino O. Trinidad, Essie Francia G. Oliver, Eloisa A. Tabirara, Abegail A. Tuazon, and Jane T. Tuboro, board of directors.

Also present during the event were Virac Diocese Apostolic Administrator Most Rev. Manolo A. delos Santos, Congressman Eulogio R. Rodriguez who was represented by his chief of staff Rudy Rojas Jr., EnP Jun Encila of the PIEP National Board of Trustees, and PIEP Camarines Sur president Mary Ruth Parro.

In her inaugural message, Santelices disclosed the group’s short term plans, which include gaining representation in the 11 Sangguniang Bayan as well as the Sangguniang Panlalawigan as an advocate and influencer for the welfare of the environment.

The group will also conduct or participate in multi-sectoral symposia on related issues like the conservation, protection and selective but regulated utilization of forest, marine and land resources; solid waste management and disposal; clean air and pollution control management; and water and hydrologic sustainability assessment and awareness workshops.

Santelices said the PIEP chapter will likewise render planning services for all LGUs in the province.

Among its long-term plans are the launching of an hour-long radio program in partnership with a local station; tie-ups with international organizations promoting similar concerns; and proactive participation as well as contribution of substantial inputs for all environment-related development endeavors.
