New COVID-19 cases plunge by 67%

New coronavirus cases decreased by a substantial 67% during the Jan. 29-Feb. 4 period, compared to the previous week, data of the Provincial Health Office (PHO) showed.

There were only 42 new COVID-19 cases last week, a huge reduction of 88 cases compared to the 130 recorded on Jan. 22-28, 2022, the same data stated.

Virac accounted for 13 of the new cases, followed by San Andres with seven (7), San Miguel, Viga and Caramoran with five (5) each, Panganiban, Bato and Gigmoto with two (2) each, and Bagamanoc with one new case.

A 95-year-old woman from the San Miguel was the oldest of the new cases, which also included seven other senior citizens.

Thirty-two (32) of the week’s cases had no travel history while 10 were determined to have been close contacts of confirmed cases.

As of Feb. 5, 2022, the number of active cases was at 119, with the total number of infected people at 3,139, of which 2,894 have recovered.

The data tracker stated that 107 were placed either on facility or home quarantine while 10 were admitted in health facilities.

Forty-eight (48) were asymptomatic and 64 had mild symptoms, with three considered moderate cases and only two with severe symptoms.

There were no new deaths last week, with the number of fatalities still at 128.

Meanwhile, the number of people availing themselves of COVID-19 vaccines continued to decline, with less than a thousand showing up for their first doses at vaccination centers.

As of Jan. 30, 2022, 194,934 people have received their first doses of the vaccines, representing 85% of the target population, compared to 194,078 on Jan. 24.

The number of fully-vaccinated people was at 161,221 or 71% of the target population. This also represents 59% of the total population, including children below 12 years old.

While those who had been fully-vaccinated increase by 1,620, those who had their booster shots jumped by 1,714 to a new total of 22,057.
