The average household size in the province in Catanduanes has continued a declining trend since 2010 and is now at 4.17 persons compared to almost 5 per household more than a decade ago,
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the average household size in the island province decreased from 4.49 persons in 2020 to 4.17 persons in 2024.
This statistic has continuously dropped over the past census years, from 4.97 persons in 2010, and 4.81 persons in 2015.
The report did not state the reason behind the decline in average household size although a 2025 PSA report noted that since 2010, the island’s population has steadily declined from a previous high of 1.5 percent in 1995.
The population growth rate slid further to 0.87 percent in 2020, when Catanduanes had 271, 879 persons, before plunging to almost negative 1 percent in 2024 with the population at 261,169, or a difference of 10,710 persons.
While the household population decreased to 270,700 persons, the number of households increased by 3.6 per cent, from 60,352 in 2020 to 62,544 in 2024.

Among the 11 municipalities, the three western towns of Virac, San Andres and Caramoran accounted for just over 54 percent of the total household population.
Virac had the largest share with 74,852 persons or 28.7 percent of the province’s household population, and the highest number of households at 17,864.
San Andres had the second biggest household population with 37,106, with 9,225 households, while Caramoran had 30,074 household population, with 6,810 households.
On the other hand, Gigmoto registered the smallest household population at 8,346 persons and the fewest households at 1,995.
It was followed by Panganiban (8,947 population and 2,224 households) and Bagamanoc (10,387 population and 2,609 households).

Of the five barangays with the largest household populations, four (4) are located in the municipality of Virac.
San Isidro Village recorded the highest household population in the province with 5,456 persons, followed by Cavinitan with 3,760 persons, Bigaa with 3,280 persons, and Calatagan Proper with 3,172 persons. Cabugao in the municipality of Bato ranked fourth with 3,217 persons, making it the only barangay outside Virac among the top five.
Of the five barangays with the lowest household populations in Catanduanes, three are located in the municipality of Baras. P. Teston recorded the lowest household population in the province with 89 persons,
followed by San Roque in San Andres with 105 persons, San Jose in Virac with 126 persons, Batolinao in Baras with 127 persons, and Quezon, also in Baras, with 132 persons.
