SP calls on gov’t to impose measures for speedy restoration of telco services

Provincial board members have urged the Department of Information and Telecommunications Technology (DICT) and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to fast-track the restoration of telecommunications services on the island following the damage left by super typhoon “Pepito” on telco facilities in Catanduanes last month.

In a resolution sponsored by PBM Josevan A. Balidoy and PBM Dean Roberto T. Vergara, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan earnestly requested DICT and NTC to impose necessary measures for the speedy restoration of telecoms services which have been disrupted by the storm.

In the days following the calamity, residents faced a huge challenge due to the lack of such services, which the SP said is vital in emergency response, communication between families, business operations, and recovery efforts.

“Telecommunication services are vital in ensuring access to timely information, coordinating relief operation, and enabling families to reconnect with their loved ones during times of crisis,” the two board members stated, adding that the lack of communication hampers efforts in responding to the needs of affected communities, delays essential aid, and obstructs the coordination of rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts.

Pursuant to Section 16 of Republic Act 7160 or the Local Government Code of 1991 on the LGU’s exercise of powers for the general welfare of its constituents, they stressed that it is the responsibility of the local government unit and telecommunication service providers to ensure the prompt restoration of services and the prioritization of affected areas, especially those still grappling with the aftermath of the typhoon.

The provincial government, PBMs Balidoy and Vergara assured, will continue to monitor the progress of these efforts and offer any support necessary to expedite the restoration of services.

The maintenance contractor of PLDT, which provides wired broadband internet services in the province, has been struggling with the restoration effort due to the considerable damage wrought on main cable lines, posts and other equipment despite adding two teams from the mainland.
