A contractor’s loaded dump truck damaged a covered canal and injured its driver when it tilted over to one side along the national highway in Bato town last week.
The tipper truck owned by GCI Construction and Development Corp. was on its way to Virac when the driver, Rechel Wasil Norcitey, 40, a native of Carrascal, Surigao del Sur, suddenly stopped at the side of the road in barangay Binanuahan at around 7:50 PM of Oct. 15, 2024.
Due to its heavy load, the rear right wheels of the truck caused the covered drainage canal to collapse and the vehicle to tip over to its side.
Norcitey sustained a back injury and was brought to the Bato Maternity and Children’s Hospital by responding personnel of the Bato police station, which attributed the incident to reckless driving.
It is the second incident involving a construction equipment in recent weeks.
Last Oct. 11 at 2 PM, a mixer truck’s rotating metal drum fell off and blocked the national road in Batolinao, Baras, causing the closure of the vital highway for three hours to motorists.
Assistant Chief of Police PCapt. Brenda Hate immediately sent personnel to the site to assist and help manage stranded commuters and vehicles, with the equipment finally removed by the contractor by 5:30 PM.
