DOST Bicol crowns winners of Supnit 2024

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Bicol regional office recently announced the winners of various research and technology contests held during the 2024 Bicol Regional Science and Technology Week last May 22-24.

In SUPNIT 2024, a research competition for junior and senior high school students, the “Project Bio-Sieve: Abaca (Musa Textilis) Fibers as a Solution for Water Pollution in Catanduanes” by Katrice Joy Vargas, Jellian Besonia and Ivan Cyrus Reaves won first place. At second and third place, respectively, were Utilization of the Abaca (Musa textilis nee) Pseudostem Extract for Cotton Dyeing with Varying Mordants” by Jaimee Tabo and “Development and Assessment of Cellulose-Based Bioplastic from Abaca (Musa Textilis Nee) Core” by Kenneth Ernie Ibayan.

In the Search for Noblest Catandunganon Researcher 2024, the group composed of Mike Russel Calais, April Rose Gil, Antonette Sancha, Mae Soneja and Maria Tugano won first place for the “Development of Natural Stain from Abaca (Musa textilis Nee) Outer Sheath Ethanolic Extract for Microscopic Observations of Onion (Allium cepa) Cells.”

Al John Tenerife’s “Design and Development of Mechanized Solar Rice Transplanter” was at second place, with Lani Ilagan’s “Revitalizing Abaca Handicraft Manufacturing in Catanduanes: A Comprehensive Approach to Overcoming Challenges, Empowering Local Communities, and Fostering Sustainable Development through Green and Blue Economy Initiatives for a Thriving, Smart, and Eco-Friendly Future.”

In the different Tech It Out contests during the 2024 Bicol Regional Science and Technology Week x AbacaNobasyon 2.0, here are the winners:

TECHTOK 2024: 1st place – “Abracadabra” by University of Santo Tomas – Legazpi; 2nd place – “Advoquettes” by Vinzons Pilot High School; and 3rd place – “Kaalaman ay Linangin nang Paunlarin ang Sariling Atin” by UST – Legazpi.

PINTABACA 2024 (Student category): 1st place – Mark Sandy Bite; 2nd place – Alexa Jewel Tapar; and 3rd place – Jinky Olaivar.

PINTABACA 2024 (Professional category): 1st place – Noel Villanueva; 2nd place – Salvador Bernal Jr.; and 3rd place – Renelyn Salceda.

AGHAMUSIKA 2024: 1st place – “Hamos Na!” by Aroroy National High School; 2nd place – “Siyensya Tungo sa Mundong Likas Kaya” by Catanduanes National High School; and 3rd place – “Muling Magsimula” by San Andres Vocational School.
