Sacerdos in Aeternum | Rev. Fr. Rommel Molina Arcilla:

Broken Promises

The world today is filled with so much problems, lies and deceit. Fake people are scattered everywhere. These are the people who are not beholden to any principle and they enjoy their selfish and destructive plans and ambitions. We can find a problem in almost every aspect of our lives; from the political aspect and even to the marital relationship of a husband and wife, we can see problems even in some government programs and projects. All of these, I believe, came up because of the broken promises made by some individuals who may have failed in keeping the promises because of some unforeseen events, or that they may never really had the intentions to make good on their promises, but simply to betray the peoples’ trust.

God made good in his promise to send us the Savior, his only Son Jesus Christ. This plan of salvation was announced long before the coming of the Messiah, and God gave us what he promised when Jesus Christ became one like us. Yes, we were saved by the grace of God regardless of our unworthiness. God promised to save us because of his great love for all of us and that promise was personified in the life of Jesus Christ.

We live in a world where promises are broken every single day. Broken promises of some of our leaders, change of plans even on the last minute, and sometimes even the person who promised to love you forever decided to ran away into somebody else’s life. Yes, I must also admit that I had broken my priestly promises so many times already. Truly, we live in a world where promises are broken every single day and, sadly, we have accepted this situation as part of our daily existence.

We live in a time where we can make and break promises with just a simple and short text message. Just a short notice through our cell phone or the social media is all it takes to cancel a plan we have made with someone. Our options are always open and we do not really care much if, in the process, we have ruined the good mood of other people around us. So, with this kind of mentality, we really find it hard to trust even a promise because there is no commitment at all.

I respect and trust people who are true to their words and promises that they have made. It is just a pity that, with the kind of society that we have now, I believe there is nobody I can trust except God. God made a promise through the words of the prophets in the Old Testament that he will send a Savior so that the whole world may be freed from its slavery to sin, and he made good in his promise when he sent us his only Son as the Messiah. Jesus was committed to God’s plans of saving the whole human race and he persevered through his blood and wounds on the cross just to complete his mission.

Jesus died for you and me and for us all and this truth gives me a reason to hope even if it means hoping against hope especially in the eyes of the desperate world that we have now. But since Jesus gave his very life for our salvation, then he is the only hope that I have and I believe that his love for me is more than enough to see me through the different pathways of life. I am sure that he will never abandon me, not even in my sinfulness because of his great love. He defeated sin and death and so now there is no reason for me to be afraid because I believe in a God who can never be defeated, not even by death.

And so, we are all children of a God who keeps his promise. Now, I believe, is our turn to make him a promise and be committed to change our ways so we can make a difference in this world filled with filthy lies and deceit and fake people.
